The Ignacio High School football team lost its fifth consecutive game Friday night, falling 62-8 to Monte Vista on the road in Colorado High School Activities Association Class 1A Southern Peaks Conference action.
Ignacio (2-5, 0-2 1A Southern Peaks Conference) had a rough night on defense, as it gave up 357 rushing yards on just 29 carries.
Senior running back Tyler Vigil got the Pirates (2-4, 1-1 SPL) on the board with a 38-yard touchdown run with 4:52 remaining in the first quarter. On the next possession, junior running back Kaidon Wenta, the Pirates leading rusher and scorer coming into the game, found the end zone on a 46-yard run, to make it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The night would only get worse for the Bobcats, as senior running back Dustin Sanchez had to leave the game on the first play of the second quarter after he took a hard hit. Sanchez was off to a good start before being forced out of the game, as he racked up a quick 31 yards on eight carries. On the ensuing play, junior quarterback Ian Weinreich got the Bobcats on the board with a two-yard quarterback keeper, and the two-point conversion was good, to keep the Bobcats in the game at 14-8 with 11:31 left in the second quarter. The Bobcats were helped by three Monte Vista penalties, and scored on a six-play, 50 yard drive that took 2:19 off the clock.
However, that was as close as it would get, as the Pirates went on to score three more times before the half. Monte Vista had scoring plays from Vigil on a 77-yard kick return, senior quarterback Zach Hindes got in on the action with a two-yard score and Wenta added his second touchdown of the game on a 26-yard run. The halftime score was 40-8 in favor of the Pirates.
In the second half, it was a similar story, as the Bobcat defense could not keep up with the Pirates run game. On the first play of the third quarter, senior wide receiver Payton Wilson briefly split time at the running back position and was able to get loose for a 44-yard touchdown run to make it 48-8. The Pirates added another score with 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter as sophomore running back Andres Maestas had a 31-yard touchdown run. In the final frame, fellow sophomore running back Cobi Garcia scored the final score of the game with 15 seconds remaining to make it 62-8.
After being in negative yardage for most of the game, Weinreich was able to gain 14 yards in his final four rushing attempts, which was enough for him to break even at 0 yards on nine attempts.
The Bobcats suited up just 13 total players – the same number as Monte Vista’s senior class.
Ignacio will host Dolores for its homecoming at 7 p.m. Friday at Bobcat Stadium.
