Fort Lewis cycling rolls into BMX nationals

Team aiming at powerhouses in Louisiana

After taking third place a year ago, the Fort Lewis College BMX team is ready for another shot at nationals.

The Fort Lewis College cycling program sent its squad to Monroe, Louisiana, for competition at the 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate BMX Nationals. The competition will run from March 10-12.

Coach Jordan Rupe has led the team since September and has a talented squad ready to take on perennial BMX powerhouses Marian University of Indianapolis and Lindsay Wilson College of Kentucky.

Senior Rebeccah Sheppard and Sophomore Hayden Raymond are top contenders for FLC. Senior Taylor Whitworth and sophomore Jacob Reese also will tackle the course looking for podium spots.

“With snow on the Durango BMX track since December, the team has been doing their training in the weight room, parking lots and even some miles on the rollers in the office,” FLC cycling director Dave Hagen said in a news release.

Hagen said the team has had positive results during four weekends of competition in Albuquerque, Greeley and Phoenix in preparation for nationals.

“Everyone is on very good form,” Hagen said.

The two-day format will determine individual and team champions. Complete qualifiers and finals will be held each day, with champions determined based on two-day point totals. Team scores will be based on the results of each team’s top three riders.
