Ignacio football welcomes Center Vikings

IHS tries to end skid
Ignacio seniors Dustin Sanchez, left, and Mike Archuleta will try to power the Ignacio Bobcats past the Center Vikings at 7 p.m. Friday in Ignacio.

Three consecutive losses have the Ignacio High School football team eager to return home for the start of the Class 1A Southern Peaks League schedule.

The Bobcats (2-3, 0-0) will host Center (3-1, 1-0 SPL) at 7 p.m. Friday. The team will enter the game hoping for new life after a 49-0 road loss last week to Colorado Springs Christian, while the Center Vikings also are eager to forget a 55-19 loss to league favorite and 2017 state runner-up Centauri.

Last week, Colorado Springs Christian ran wild on the Bobcats defense, as Peyton Brones and Joe Dunn combined for 281 yards and six touchdowns – three each – on only 14 carries.

The two teams have two common opponents this year. Both opened the season against Lake County out of Leadville and earned big wins, as Ignacio won 41-0 and Center won 31-14. The two sides have also faced John Mall out of Walsenburg this year. Center disposed of John Mall 16-8 on the road, while the Bobcats fell to the Panthers 44-23 in Ignacio.

Center has shown it can pass the ball, as sophomore Habran De La Cruz has completed more than 50 percent of his passes. Cosme Cordova has led the team in rushing this season, followed by Devin Porres. Armando Salazar has been the top target for De La Cruz in the passing game.

IHS will try to do a better job on run defense this week and will try to get the offense going behind an offensive line that has dealt with injuries the last several weeks.

Center did not field a varsity team last year. The teams last met Oct. 29, 2016, a 34-0 Center win in Ignacio.
