Bayfield High School students in the Skills USA program are returning to state competition next week in Colorado Springs. Skills USA is a national technical trades and engineering club.
Taking first in district competition in Durango in February were Dylan Burress in cabinet making; Chad Winkler in architectural drafting; and Wyatt Whitmer in technical drafting.
Capturing second place were John Foutz in carpentry and Cordell Ashcraft in architectural drafting. Claire Hufnagel also will compete in cabinet making.
The BHS Quiz Bowl team, which has captured state titles in the past, had no competition in districts and also will attend state in Colorado Springs. This year's team is Allison Fender, Kody Hoffman, Whitmer, Winkler and Ashcraft. These students are advised by Curtis Gillespie.
And in a first for BHS, video game design and digital cinema teams also will compete at state.
They are Chase Noonan and Nathan Kvech in digital cinema production and Sebastian Sporl and Dalton Caviness in video game design. They were assisted by Antonio Crouchelli, another Skills USA member. Jacob Gullian and Xander Hovenstine also will participate in Quiz Bowl. The video and cinema students are advised by Nick Lemmer.
