Five points in the first half was all the Durango High School boys basketball team could muster Friday night.
“It was about as bad as it can get,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said.
Playing in just their second game this season, the Demons were sluggish against Ponderosa High School (4-1) in the second round of Ponderosa’s tournament.
The second half was much better, but DHS (1-1) fell 37-26.
“Our defense stepped up, and we cut it to 10 points in the second half. It was 10 times better than the first half,” Batiste said.
DHS struggled to deal with the length of Ponderosa. Batiste admitted it is hard to fault the players in an unfamiliar gym so early in the season.
“It was Ponderosa’s fifth game and only our second. Our guys need to get their feet wet,” he said.
DHS will play at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against Loveland in the third-place game of the tournament.
“We need to turn it around and go in there ready for our third game in three days,” Batiste said.
