Business center looks at strategic planning
The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center, in conjunction with area business partners, is sponsoring a Leading Edge Strategic Planning Series for new and experienced business owners and managers.
The 12-week course, held on Wednesdays, will begin Jan. 21, and continue until April 8. The Business Management and Planning Course to Master Essential Skills for Starting, Managing and Growing your Business Wisely is appropriate for all business types, including agriculture and nonprofits.
Top reasons to attend include: mastering money management, budgeting and accounting, understanding what your value to customers is, establishing best pricing and marketing practices, learning to plan to make a profit, testing ideas and more.
Tuition includes: 36 hours of instruction from qualified presenters. Two members of the business may attend five hours of individual counseling, and they can gain access to SBDC resources, opportunities to address individual needs. Cash awards will be offered to the top three business plans submitted.
Full tuition is $300 for the entire course or $50 per session. Scholarships may be available. Classes will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Education Business Hall Room 110, on the Fort Lewis College campus.

Oil-, gas-engineering firm adds to its team
Halker Consulting, an oil and gas engineering firm, has added Michael Scull senior facilities adviser for the San Juan Basin.
Scull has more than 35 years of on- and off-shore gas and oil industry experience, with more than 20 years in leadership roles and has spent the last 20 years in coal-bed methane, working in both operations and engineering roles. He holds two patents for gas-extraction technologies and co-authored a paper for the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Scull is now based out of Halker’s office in downtown Durango.
Prior to joining Halker Consulting, Scull worked as a base facility engineer and production supervisor for BP in Durango and as a maintenance and facility supervisor for Vastar Resources in Farmington.
Craig Larson named state’s top assessor
Craig Larson, La Plata County assessor, was chosen as Assessor of the Year by the Colorado Assessor’s Association.
This is a group of all the county assessor’s in the state. Larson was recognized by his peers for his dedication to the profession, his long services and the innovations he has brought to his department.
State economic officials visit Durango
Staff from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade will be in Durango on Thursday for an update with economic-development, business and community leaders.
The agenda will include an update on the agency’s work, regional industry trends, a grant opportunity for advanced industries, an update from the Colorado Tourism Office and opportunities to learn more about state business resources.
The meeting will be at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Avenue. The group is touring the Western Slope – stopping in Montrose on Wednesday and the San Luis Valley on Friday.
The agency works to advance the state’s economy through financial and technical assistance in support of local and regional economic-development activities throughout Colorado.

Vectra Bank holds economic forecast
Vectra Bank is inviting the public to participate in its 22nd annual Economic Forecast Update via webcast on Feb. 4.
Economic experts are in agreement that Colorado’s economy is in full-expansion mode. At Vectra Bank’s update, the public will be invited to participate from home through a live webcast, as Henry Sobanet, Colorado’s director of the Office of State Planning and Budgeting; Elizabeth Garner, state demographer; and economist Patricia Silverstein break down the state’s 2015 forecast.
The panel will look at business growth, fiscal health and economic development in detail.
Chimney cleaner announces opening
Animas Chimney Sweeps, owned by Tyler Nelson, announces its opening.
Nelson, who has four years of chimney inspection and cleaning experience, earned certification at the Chimney Sweep Institute of America.
