And the West is History

100 years ago: “Contestants making splendid showing – keen rivalry – in Herald’s subscription contest: In District 2, where one Victrola, one diamond ring, and one ladies watch will be awarded, Miss Lizzie Giacomelli of Silverton, a very popular and energetic lady, has forged to the front of the race with 69,010 points.”

50 YEARS AGO: “There are more than 195 million Americans today. Newspaper circulation has grown 19 percent in the past 20 years. Newspaper employment and advertising has tripled in the same period. There is one reason for this growth: Only the newspaper covers the news fully and in depth. There is no substitute for the daily news.”

25 YEARS AGO: “The ‘Three Durangos’ of Colorado, Mexico and Spain will be reunited Tuesday morning when dignitaries of the cities begin a week of celebration here. The city has planned more than 50 events through Sept. 9 for the 26 special visitors. The name Durango, which reportedly means water town, was first used to name the original Durango in Bizkaia, a Basque province in northern Spain.”
