Newman skips late pit stop, stuns field in Phoenix

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Ryan Newman gambled and skipped a tire-changing pit stop to take the lead from deep in the pack and held on for the final two laps for a surprise victory in Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series race.

The 39-year-old Newman, who broke a 127-race winless streak, held off Kyle Larsen, the second-place finisher for the third straight race.

Kyle Busch, the leader for nearly all of the final stage of the race, was third on a day when the temperature soared to 97 degrees at Phoenix International Raceway.

Like nearly all the rest of the field, Larsen and Busch went to the pits on the late caution caused when Joey Logano’s car blew a right tire and slammed into the wall six laps from the finish.

The 29-year-old former Arizona State player shot a 4-under 68 on Sunday to hold off fellow major champions Ariya Jutanugarn, Stacy Lewis and In Gee Chun by two strokes in record 96-degree heat at Desert Ridge.

Nordqvist finished at 25-under 263, two strokes off the LPGA Tour record that Sei Young Kim matched last year at Desert Ridge. The 6-foot Swede had a tournament-record 61 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round.

Tom Lehman rallies to beat Steve Stricker in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – Tom Lehman took advantage of senior newcomer Steve Stricker’s late mistakes Sunday to win the Tucson Conquistadores Classic for his 10th PGA Tour Champions victory.

Two strokes behind Stricker with three holes to play, Lehman closed with two birdies and a par for a 7-under 66 and a one-stroke victory over playing partner Stricker.

Stricker followed his second-round 63 with a 70. He was trying to become the 19th player to win in his first start on the 50-and-over tour and first since Miguel Angel Jimenez in 2014.

The 58-year-old Lehman won the 1996 British Open and four other PGA Tour titles.

Frenzel wins record 5th Nordic combined title

SCHONACH, Germany – Eric Frenzel wrapped up an unprecedented fifth straight Nordic combined World Cup title on Sunday with his 10th win of the season.

The Olympic champion could only have been denied by German teammate Johannes Rydzek going into the final event.

It was Frenzel’s third straight World Cup win. He finished Sunday with a total time of 28 minutes, 49.7 seconds after the 10K cross-country race and his eighth-placed finish in the ski jump.

It was Frenzel’s 41st career victory. The 28-year-old German finished with 1,734 points, 125 ahead of Rydzek.

Stoch wins ski jump round, Kasai beats own age record

VIKERSUND, Norway – Poland’s Kamil Stoch enjoyed a dramatic win in the ski jumping World Cup on Sunday to slash overall leader Stefan Kraft’s advantage.

Stoch was second after the first round but won with 466.6 points when leader Andreas Wellinger became unstable in the air on his last jump and dropped to 18th.

The 44-year-old Japanese jumper Noriaki Kasai broke his own record as the oldest man to make a World Cup podium, finishing second on 448 points.

Stoch cut Kraft’s standings lead to 31 points after the Austrian could only finish fifth Sunday. Two individual events remain next week in Slovenia.
