History tour coming to Hesperus

In celebration of May as historic preservation month, the La Plata County Historic Preservation Review Commission presents the 3rd Annual La Plata County Historic Driving Tour on Saturday May 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All the tour sites this year are in the Hesperus area.

They are: 9 a.m., the old Fort Lewis historic library, 18683 Hwy 140, with presentation by Beth LaShell at 9:30 and a 1/4 mile walking tour at 10; at 12:30 p.m., stop at the Breen Community Building, 15300 Hwy 140; tour the Aspaas home, 17238 Hwy 140, at 2 p.m.

The event is free and the public is invited to stop by any or all of the tour sites to visit and learn about the rich history of Old Fort Lewis, the Breen Community Building and the Aspaas Family Homestead. There will be presentations about the history of each site.

Lunch will be served by the Breen Community Building Association for $8. Please RSVP for lunch by Wednesday, May 11, by calling 749-5338.
