After a long wait, the Durango Demons finally played a baseball game.
It didn’t take the Demons’ bats long to heat up, though. Durango (1-0) put up 11 runs in an 11-7 win against Fort Collins (0-2) in a tournament being played this weekend in Montrose.
“We played pretty good baseball for our first day out,” DHS head coach Rob Coddington said. “We only had one defensive error, and we really got the bats going in the third and fifth innings.”
Zac Gasaway and Jeremy Szura both finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in and a double.
Isiah Mayberry was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, and Blake Dunlap was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Ben Wiley pitched six complete innings for the Demons, and he picked up the win. He allowed five hits and three runs while striking out five.
Wyatt Wymore pitched 1/3 of an inning before Casey Dunlap came on to finish the final 2/3.
“Fort Collins rallied a bit and scored four runs in the seventh inning. Dunlap got us out of it,” Coddington said. “Wiley did really well with the start.”
Durango was on the verge of a run-rule victory earlier in the game, but the Demons couldn’t push a runner on third base across to finish it.
The Demons are back in action Saturday with a pair of games against Bear Creek and Delta in Montrose. Play against Bear Creek is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., and the game against Delta is slated for 4 p.m.
