American uprising: Memphis, Temple join Houston

Memphis and Temple jumped into The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this season, joining Houston to give the American Athletic Conference three ranked teams for the first time in the history of the three-year old league.

Ohio State remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25 released Sunday. For the second consecutive week, six teams received first-place votes in the media poll, led by the Buckeyes with 28. No. 2 Baylor has 12, No. 3 Utah received 16, No. 4 TCU got three and No. 5 LSU and No. 6 Clemson each have one.

The Utes and LSU Tigers each edged ahead one spot after home victories Saturday.

Cycling

USA Cycling appoints a new technical director

COLORADO SPRINGS – Chuck Hodge was appointed the technical director at USA Cycling. Hodge replaces Mark Guthart, who was hired last year to replace the fired Shawn Farrell.

Hodge has spent much of his career advising and consulting with race directors and cycling organizations. He was the technical director for the recent road cycling world championships in Richmond, Virginia, along with the Tour of California and Tour of Missouri.

Grillo wins playoff in rookie debut at Silverado

NAPA, Calif. – Emiliano Grillo of Argentina won in his PGA Tour rookie debut Sunday at the Frys.com Open by holing a 25-foot birdie putt for a 3-under 69, and then making the most out of a second chance in a playoff to beat Kevin Na.

Grillo had a 3-foot birdie putt on No. 18 on the first playoff hole when he pulled it to the left.

The next mistake belonged to Na, who made a 6-foot birdie putt on the last hole in regulation for a 70 to force extra holes. From the 18th fairway on the second playoff hole, Na hooked his driver behind a tree and made bogey.

Sullivan wins Portugal Masters by 9 shots

VILAMOURA, Portugal – Andy Sullivan of England easily won the Portugal Masters on Sunday after extending his lead to finish nine strokes ahead.

Sullivan had a five-stroke lead as he entered the final round at the Oceanico Victoria course, which started late due to heavy overnight rain. He increased that margin by hitting five birdies for a flawless 5-under 66 to finish with a total of 23-under 261.

It was the 28-year-old Sullivan’s third European Tour win after victories at the South African Open and the Joburg Open earlier this year.

Fellow countryman Chris Wood finished second, followed one more stroke back by a three-way tie for third of Anthony Wall, Trevor Fisher Jr. and Eduardo de la Riva.

Thompson wins LPGA Tour event in South Korea

INCHEON, South Korea – Lexi Thompson broke out of a crowded pack Sunday to win the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship for her second victory of the year and sixth overall.

The 20-year-old American closed with a 3-under 69 to beat Taiwan’s Yani Tseng and South Korea’s Sung Hyun Park by a stroke. Thompson finished at 15-under 273 on Sky 72’s Ocean Course.

Park shot a 71, and Tseng had a 68.

Langer rallies for 25th Champions Tour victory

SAN ANTONIO – Bernhard Langer rallied to win the San Antonio Championship on Sunday for his second victory of the year and 25th overall on the Champions Tour.

The 58-year-old German star birdied the final two holes – making an 18-footer on the par-4 18th – for a 7-under 65 and a three-stroke victory over Scott Dunlap.
