Student accidentally shoots and kills gun store owner

AMELIA, Ohio – As the owner of a popular gun store in Amelia, Ohio, James Baker was known for preaching safety first.

In the end, a gun-safety class cost the 64-year-old his life.

On Saturday, Baker was fatally shot when a student in a concealed-carry class at KayJay Gun Shop accidentally discharged a weapon while practicing malfunction drills, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The bullet traveled through a wall and into an adjacent room, where Baker was struck in the neck, the paper reported.

Baker was pronounced dead at the scene, according to ABC affiliate WCPO. Clermont County officials told the Enquirer that the death was accidental.

13 children, counselor die in Russian boat accident

MOSCOW – At least 13 children and a counselor at a Russian summer camp died Sunday in a boating accident that has devastated parents and that investigators have suggested is the result of criminal negligence by the camp’s staff.

Police said three boats from the summer camp in Russia’s northern Karelia region capsized during a storm on Lake Syamozero, plunging 47 children and four adults into the subarctic waters. Rescuers were still recovering bodies from the lake Sunday evening. Five children were hospitalized with hypothermia and trauma wounds.

Negligence and poor regulatory oversight have been the usual suspects for Russian investigators after similar tourism accidents in the past.

The Investigative Committee, which specializes in probing high-profile crimes, has opened a criminal case over suspected safety violations, arresting one camp official and seeking two others who had “hidden from investigators.”

‘Star Trek Beyond’ actor Anton Yelchin dies at 27

LOS ANGELES – “Star Trek Beyond” actor Anton Yelchin died early Sunday morning at age 27 in a “fatal traffic collision,” according to his publicist, Jennifer Allen.

Yelchin was found pinned between his car and a gate in his inclined driveway, Los Angeles police Officer Jenny Hosier told the Associated Press. The car was in neutral with the engine still running when the actor’s body was discovered, according to TMZ. Friends found the scene after becoming alarmed when he didn’t show up to meet them. No foul play is suspected.

Yelchin, whose third turn as Chekov in the forthcoming “Star Trek” sequel is due in theaters next month, was an up-and-coming actor known for his roles in a number of films, including “Alpha Dog,” “Charlie Bartlett,” “Like Crazy” and “Green Room.” He was no stranger to working with big-name actors - including Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis, Robert Downey Jr., Diane Lane, Jennifer Lawrence and Susan Sarandon – while barely out of his teens.

Born March 11, 1989, to figure-skating Russian parents, Yelchin and his family moved to the United States when he was 6-months-old. His first acting gig was on the hit show “ER” in 2000. Yelchin acted on several television shows, including “The Practice,” “Criminal Minds,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “NYPD Blue.” But it was his turn in the 2001 film “Hearts in Atlantis,” based on Stephen King’s book, that earned him critical acclaim and a Young Artist Award for best performance in a feature film.
