The Liberty School to host Visitors Day
The Liberty School will host a Visitors Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.
All are welcome. The school, on the second floor of 215 E. 12th St., is a small, private school that maximizes the potential of dyslexic, gifted and twice exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) children.

Health education scholarship available
The Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center announces a statewide health-professions scholarship worth as much as $30,000.
The two-year scholarship will assist enrolled, graduate-level health-professions students by paying a significant portion of their tuition.
Groups eligible for the scholarship include enrolled nurse practitioners, physician assistants and behavioral-health students as well as other types of graduate-level students seeking medical degrees.
Winners of the scholarship must agree to practice in a rural or under-served Colorado community for at least two years. The application deadline is May 15.

Continuing education is available at FLC
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“WordPress Made Simple: How to Easily Create Your Own Website or Blog” will be taught by Doc Roberts the evenings of April 30 and May 7. This class will guide people in creating a site from scratch with user-friendly WordPress tools including design templates, custom menus, essential plug-ins, creating and submitting posts/articles, search engine optimization, linking with social media, posting photos, videos, podcasts and more. The cost is $99 for two classes.
“Goat Kids, Cheese and Milk Field Trip” with Jim Graham and Margaret Stone will be held May 4. During a two-hour tour of J & M Dairy, people will see goat kids and other animals while hearing an overview about the basics of proper feeding, sheltering and care of dairy goats and kids. Participants also will receive samples of the milk, butter and yogurt. The cost is $34.

The digital arts, math and science classes will host their End of Year Exhibition from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 2 at AHS.

Durango district to host public budget meeting
Durango School District 9-R will host a public budget meeting at 6 p.m. today in the board room in the Central Office, 201 E. 12th St.
Superintendent Dan Snowberger will share the proposed 2013-14 school budget and explain large expenditure items and budget plans for the next school year.

Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed to students Friday for a professional development day.
Escalante to host open house today
Escalante Middle School will host an open house for incoming sixth-graders from 6 to 7 p.m. today.
The open house will provide the opportunity for incoming sixth-grade students and families to learn about Escalante, meet principals, counselors and teachers, and learn about the characteristics that make Escalante a unique school.

Miller Middle School to host Introduction Night
Miller Middle School will host its Introduction Night from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday to receive the class of 2020.
Information will be presented at 6 p.m. in the auditorium.
Sunnyside to host ceremony, chili cook-off
Sunnyside Elementary School will host a chili cook-off, award ceremony and community forum from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
This will be a celebration of Sunnyside receiving the John Irwin Award, which is given to schools that exceed expectations on the three-year performance indicator related to academic achievement and that meet or exceed expectations about the indicator related to academic growth gaps.
Superintendent Dan Snowberger and members of the Durango School District 9-R School Board will present Sunnyside with the award.
After the ceremony, there will be a chili cook-off. After the cook-off, participants will have an opportunity to participate in a discussion with Snowberger about 21st century learning.

Durango district programs are seeking volunteers
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at Miller Middle School and Atlas at Durango High School are looking for parents and community members to participate on their steering committee.
This team will work with the International Baccalaureate coordinator to help develop clear, written plans that provide the program’s goals, strategies, accountability and time lines.

Atlas committee to host fundraiser
The Durango High School Atlas Small Learning Committee will host an Empty Bowls fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. May 7 in the school’s cafeteria.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and students. They will be available at the door. Tickets include a meal of soup and bread.
Culinary students will cook the soups. Creative art students and others are creating the bowls to auction at the event. Students have researched local and international organizations that work to end poverty and hunger. They will vote on one of each to donate proceeds to from the event.

Miller Middle School to host Poetry Slam on May 1
Miller Middle School will host its 13th annual Poetry Slam from 6 to 7 p.m. May 1 in the school’s commons area.
This year’s theme, “Imagine,” focuses on the essence of the word as well as themes from John Lennon’s song “Imagine.”
The Poetry Slam will be held after a poetry symposium today at which Miller will host the organization “Poetry Alive!”
In the morning, performers will bring poetry alive on stage with student participation in the auditorium. After the performance, classroom workshops with the poets will be held throughout the day.
Durango safety council to meet Thursday
Durango School District 9-R’s School Health and Safety Advisory Council will meet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday in board room in the Central Office, 201 E. 12th St.
Topics will include updates about Durango High School’s School-Based Health Center, including upcoming changes; and an update about the implementation of health education standards with an opportunity for comment. The health-education program includes nutrition, sexuality, tobacco, alcohol and drug-use prevention, social and emotional health and violence-prevention education. The public is welcome.

DHS athletics, activities to host information night
The Durango High School Athletic/Activities Department will conduct a “Rush Night” for all eighth- to 11th-grade students and their parents or guardians from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria.
The event will include athletics and band. Coaches and sponsors will talk about programs, summer camps, open gyms and more.
Durango district parents can participate in survey
The Durango School District 9-R District Accountability and Advisory Committee is hosting a survey through Friday.
The survey will gather information from parents to help identify strengths and areas for improvement.
The committee is made up of parents, teachers and administrators representing every school in the district as well as members of the public.
The survey can be found at durangoschools.org or visit one of the schools’ websites.
During parent/teacher conferences in April, the computer labs will be available for parents to use to complete the survey.
Schools will analyze and review data and share the results with their School Accountability Council. The survey results also will be posted online.
Durango health centers hosting Brick Campaign
Durango School District 9-R School-Based Health Centers are holding a Brick Campaign through May 31.
The campaign allows community members to purchase one of two bricks, priced at $50 and $100. All profits collected will go to cover operation costs, such as salaries for health-care providers and supplies.
All bricks will be engraved with a message of the patron’s choice, and will be displayed in the front entry of the center at Durango High School.

Poetry Slam to be held today at Arts Center
Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will hold its annual Poetry Slam from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three performers, as judged by a panel of community members.
The event is open to the public, but only current high school students may enter the competition.
Student poets will need to sign in between 5:30 and 6 p.m. to be included.
Creativity Festivity to run through Saturday
The Creativity Festivity exhibit will be held through Saturday at Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
This year’s show is called “The Many Stories of Masks,” and it includes the work from several Durango High School visual-art students.
