One possible way to help our at-risk kids

As we look for solutions to what appears to be a suicide crisis in our community, I urge both parents and community members to consider rock climbing as one small way to possibly make a difference in kids’ lives.

The rock climbing team run by Marcus Garcia is incredibly inclusive and fun. It is a great way to be part of a team without the competitiveness or even the need for great athleticism. Even kids who don’t know how to climb at all will have fun.

The focus on the team is personal growth, not winning or losing. Kids who may feel like they don’t have a community or friends, will find that on the rock climbing team. Marcus is an exceptional mentor who brings kids outside and teaches them to love and value themselves. He has created a team dynamic free of bullying where all are welcome.

The Rock Lounge is moving to a new location, and the team will start to spend a ton of time outside as the weather improves. If cost is a factor, the team will figure out a way to make it work. I know it is not the only answer, but rock climbing can be one small way to help kids find community and feel great about themselves.
