Crow Canyon to offer workshop for educators
Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is offering a workshop called “Mesa Verde National Park: Convergences and Crossroads in the American Southwest” for kindergarten to 12th-grade educators.
This National Endowment for the Humanities workshop will explore significant subjects in American anthropology, such as the importance of place, what makes history and who constructs it.
Participants will explore Mesa Verde, conduct hands-on archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analysis, and join readings, lectures and discussion groups.
Teachers will learn how Native Americans, anthropologists and archaeologists work together to provide a picture of Pueblo history and culture.
Two sessions will be offered: June 22–28 or July 20–26. The workshops will be based at Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, 23390 County Road K, near Cortez. Participants will receive a stipend to cover the cost of travel and living expenses while at the workshop.
Kathy Stemmler, the center’s director of education, will lead the workshop. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 4.

Student aid application to be discussed
A hands-on help session about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Durango High School Library.
This event is only for Durango High School seniors and their families. People who attend will need to:
Apply for a student and parent personal identification number by going to FAFSA.ed.gov. A personal identification number is an electronic signature. The student and the parent, who will be listed on the FAFSA, must each have a personal identification number.
Bring a tax return. People who have not filed their 2013 tax return by this event should bring their 2012 tax returns to use as a guide to estimate 2013 figures in the income section of the FAFSA.
Bring the student’s 2013 W-2s, if he or she has any.
Financial aid staff members from Fort Lewis College will be available to help complete the application online.
Durango school board to meet Tuesday
The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
Big Picture High School will be the school highlight.
DHS to raise money during Wish Week
Students at Durango High School will host Wish Week from Jan. 13 to 17.
They will raise money to support a young boy, Brady, who has leukemia. His dream is to go to Disney World.
Students will collect money for Pie a Teacher. The largest donators for Pie a Teacher will be able to throw the pies at volunteer teachers during an assembly.
Students also will raise money in these ways:
On Jan. 13, students will be able to purchase hot chocolate before school or eat at Zia Taqueria, which will donate a portion of its Dish for a Wish profits to Wish Week.
Jan. 14 will be Twin Dress Up Day.
Jan. 15 will be Fake an Injury Dress Up Day, and there will be a dodge-ball tournament
Jan. 16 will be Preppy Dress Up Day, and the winter sports assembly will feature Pie a Teacher and Miracle Minute.
On Jan. 17, a raffle will be held.
The Winter Formal will be held Jan. 18 at the DoubleTree Hotel.
