It may have been Madeline Robertson’s 16th birthday, but she delivered her teammates a present Saturday.
Robertson scored a game-winning goal for the Durango Demons’ girls soccer team (1-0-1) Saturday in a 1-0 win against Montrose (0-1-0).
“We are happy because it was Maddie’s birthday, and she scored a big goal for us,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “She had a free kick from about 30 yards out and just got a nice shot in the goal.”
Robertson’s goal came about 25 minutes into the game. DHS had 10 shots on goal in all Saturday.
Montrose had eight shots on goal, but DHS goalkeeper Leah Stevens didn’t let anything get past her.
“They tested us with those eight shots, but (Stevens) made every save,” Parker said.
It was the first win of the season for the Demons, who finished a scoreless game against Fruita Monument on Friday in their season opener.
“The team played great and took big steps from Friday’s game to this game,” Parker said. “To do that early in the season is big for us. We possessed the ball really well and for longer spurts than Friday. It was a great weekend for us.”
Durango is back in action 5 p.m. Friday at Grand Junction.
The Demons will play at Grand Junction Central on Saturday in Grand Junction.
“The girls are very tough and are coming together as a unit and not as a bunch of individuals,” Parker said.
“We have a lot of things to work on this week in practice with our spacing and combinations and things like that, but we are pleased overall.”
