This fall you will have the opportunity to invest in your community’s basic infrastructure. Ballot question 2A proposes a moderate increase to property tax and sales tax in order to fund needed basic street maintenance and provide police and safety services.
For residential properties, the tax proposed equates to an increase of $38.88 per year per $100,000 actual value. For a $400,000 home this equals an increase in property tax of $153 a year or only $12.75 a month.
For the sales tax portion, if a household spends $800 a month on taxable items, the 0.55 percent sales tax increase equates to $4.40 per month, an increase of $52.80 over the course of a year.
These modest increases will achieve big results. Our city budget is funded largely on sales tax revenues, which is rapidly declining due to increasing trends in online shopping, thus our city will soon no longer to be able to afford very basic services like maintaining our streets and hiring police officers.
This proposal provides the foundation of a safe city by meeting the needs of our police and maintaining our streets by repairing marginal ones and spending a fraction of the cost in preventative maintenance on others.
Please continue to support our local merchants and please join me in voting YES for 2A.
