Higher standards are being set by the Durango High School boys lacrosse team.
Even after a 10-6 road victory against Eagle Valley, a team that beat the Demons 12-7 a year ago, the Demons weren’t satisfied.
“It is refreshing to see. We won the game, but the team was not happy with it, because we know we can play better,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “In the past, teams would’ve been excited to win, but this team has more focus and is more hungry.”
Liam Millar led the Demons (4-1, 2-1 Mountain League) in points Friday with two goals and two assists while picking up seven groundballs in the road win in Gypsum.
Wesley Komick led the team in goals with three. Jacob Boyle had a big game by winning 8-of-10 faceoffs and seven groundballs. He also scored two goals.
Jared Cook had two goals and one assist, and Duncan Whitley had one goal, one assist and scooped up six groundballs.
The Demons led 7-1 at halftime, allowing Robinette to use his entire bench in the second half. DHS outshot Eagle Valley 18-10 in the first half and had 19 groundballs to the Devils’ 11.
“We were feeling really good at halftime after pretty much controlling and dominating the game,” Robinette said. “We let off a little bit in the second half and got everyone into the game. We didn’t play as clean as we wanted and had things we want to clean up, but we never gave up the lead.”
Robinette was pleased with the play of goaltender Walker Brown, who made 11 saves in the game. He also credited the defense in front of Brown.
Kyle Robinette had a team-high eight groundballs while winning 4-of-5 faceoffs.
The Demons have a big weekend coming up next week with a trip to Valor Christian on Friday and Pueblo West on Saturday.
“Valor Christian was in the final four of the 4A state tournament last year. That is a huge game for us and will be a great learning experience,” coach Robinette said. “We are starting a rivalry with Pueblo West, who we played and beat at home last year.
“We need a great week of practice to be ready.”
