Manziel wows elder Bush, others at A&M’s pro day

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Johnny Manziel put on a show at his NFL pro day for an audience that included former President George H.W. Bush.

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner threw for 75 officials from 30 teams on the Texas A&M campus Thursday.

He also had some special guests, as the former President and wife Barbara rolled into the facility on golf carts about 10 minutes into the workout.

Manziel threw about 65 passes to six receivers, including A&M teammate Mike Evans, who, like Manziel, is expected to be a first round pick in May’s draft. Manziel caused a stir by choosing to wear a helmet and shoulder pads during the workout.

Van Garderen wins the fourth stage of the Volta a Catalunya

SETCASES, Spain – American cyclist Tejay Van Garderen pulled away on the final uphill climb in snow and heavy fog to win the fourth stage of the Volta a Catalunya on Thursday, while Joaquim Rodriguez maintained the lead.

Van Garderen of BMC emerged from the cloud enveloping the Vallter 2000 special category summit and edged Romain Bardet around the final turn to claim the 103-mile ride through the Pyrenees in nearly five hours.

Alberto Contador crossed three seconds later in third, followed by Rodriguez and fellow challenger Nairo Quintana. Tour de France winner Christopher Froome finished seventh at eight seconds behind Van Garderen.

Phil Mickelson shoots 77 in foggy Texas Open first round

SAN ANTONIO – Long after the fog cleared at TPC San Antonio, Phil Mickelson remained shrouded in an increasingly alarming funk with the Masters two weeks away.

Mickelson shot a 5-over 77 on Thursday in the Texas Open to fall nine strokes back during the suspended first round.

Pat Perez and Danny Lee shot 4-under 68 to share the clubhouse lead and Andrew Loupe was 4 under with seven holes to play when darkness forced the suspension of play. The start was delayed 2 hours, 40 minutes because of fog, and 45 players were unable to finish the round.

Creamer, Uribe share Kia Classic lead at 5-under

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Paula Creamer easily overcame tricky morning wind conditions for a share of the first-round lead in the Kia Classic with Mariajo Uribe.

Creamer and Uribe shot 5-under 67 on Thursday at Aviara to finish a stroke ahead of Cristie Kerr, Shanshan Feng, Jodi Ewart Shaddoff and Mi Hyang Lee.

Ravens’ Ray Rice indicted on aggravated assault charge

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has been indicted on a charge he assaulted his fiancee in an elevator at casino in Atlantic City, N.J.

Rice had been charged with simple assault after police said he knocked out Janay Palmer on Feb. 15 at the Revel Casino. But a grand jury indicted him Thursday on a more serious count of aggravated assault. It carries a three-to-five-year sentence.

Palmer also had been charged with simple assault. Prosecutors say that complaint was dismissed.

Police: Colts owner Irsay had $29K in cash when arrested

CARMEL, Ind. – Police say Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay had $29,000 in cash with him when he was arrested last week on suspicion of intoxicated driving.

The Indianapolis Star reports it obtained the Carmel police documents on Irsay’s March 16 arrest through a public records request.

An officer writes that he stopped Irsay’s SUV after it twice stopped on a city street for no apparent reason.
