The Fort Lewis College volleyball team knew it was about to run into tough competition to open the season, and that competition came away with a sweep of the Skyhawks on Friday on the West Coast.
Sonoma State downed FLC 3-0 in Friday’s first match, and No. 14 Cal State-San Bernardino topped FLC 3-0 in the late contest as the Skyhawks opened the 2013 campaign at the CSUSB Coyote Classic in San Bernardino, Calif.
Sonoma State won the first match 25-18, 25-11, 25-18, but statistics were not available for the match.
The Coyotes illustrated just why they’re ranked in the nation’s top 15 in Division II. They compiled an attack percentage of .317, led by Alexandra Torline’s 13 kills. Hannah Liserra paced CSUSB with 26 assists.
Ashley Wells led FLC with nine kills, Jenna Kinzer had 10 digs, and Ciara Krening had 19 assists. Stephani Sonka had eight kills.
FLC, which played its first competitive matches under first-year head coach Kelley Rifilato, will wrap its weekend in San Bernardino, Calif., with matches against Cal State-Los Angeles and Cal Poly-Pomona on Saturday.
