High winds blow Demons off the Pueblo track

While the weather wreaks havoc, at least the throwers had fun

The Durango Demons were blown out of the stadium at Pueblo Centennial.

After a lengthy delay because of a power outage in the stadium, the Durango track and field teams competed in a few events before racing was brought to a halt because of relentless wind.

“The wind was absolutely miserable,” DHS head coach David McMillan said. “The stadium lost electricity for a while, and the wind was at 40 miles per hour, so they decided to call it because it was just too much. We did have a good time while we were there.”

A few athletes who didn’t mind the wind were the Demons’ throwers. Colin Grushkin threw the discus 114 feet and the shot put 38 feet, 7 inches, both personal bests. Breann Hawman threw the discus 77 feet, also a personal best.

“We got in a bunch of good throws. A lot of the events were canceled before the finals, so that made it tough,” McMillan said.

DHS junior Miranda Gallegos was the star of the day for the DHS girls. She won the long jump with a leap of 16-7.25. She also placed third in the 100-meter dash.

“It was tough for Miranda to judge her run up in the long jump with the wind; it was tricky,” McMillan said. “Assistant coach Johnny Bertrand did an excellent job getting her distance right where she needed to. That jump will probably qualify her for state. She has missed it the last two years by half an inch. This was her personal best by more than an inch, so we hope it gets her to state.”

DHS junior Justin Marcum placed second in the boys pole vault after clearing 11-6. DHS freshman Jessica Lee jumped a personal best 7-3 to take fifth in the girls pole vault.

DHS senior sprinter Devin Lewis, who placed seventh in the 200-meter dash at last year’s state meet, was involved in a photo finish in the boys 100-meter dash. McMillan was unsure whether or not he took first or second.

The DHS boys 4x800 relay team of Joe Crawford, Joe Logan, Garrett Mulkey and Nicholas Turco placed third.

“Everything else was just hammered by the wind,” McMillan said. “The kids all ran hard in their heats, but it was into a gale force wind all day.”

The Demons will hope for better weather next Saturday in Broomfield at the Broomfield Shootout.
