One down, one to go.
The Durango High School boys soccer team extended its season-long winning streak to six games Friday afternoon with a 6-1 victory against Grand Junction Central.
The win put the Demons just one game away from clinching the Southwestern League title, and DHS can finish it off at 3 p.m. Saturday with a season-finale win against Grand Junction at the Riverview Sports Complex.
“Everybody is tuned in and ready to go. Everyone except one guy is healthy, and we are ready to finish the season strong,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said.
DHS (11-2-1, 6-1 SWL) received goals from seniors Nate Curmano and Logan Graham, juniors Nick Jernigan, who scored twice, and Austin Urban, as well as freshman Elijah Fenton, who netted his team-high 15th goal of the season.
The Demons were up just 2-0 at halftime against the Warriors (1-12-2, 0-7-1 SWL) despite eight scoring chances.
“We hit the post three times, and their keeper made three big saves,” Parker said. “They had zero shots on goal in the first half against us and one on frame the entire game.”
That one shot on frame resulted in a goal for the Warriors and made the game 2-1 momentarily, and Parker said that goal sparked his team to finish the game strong.
“It was rough there for awhile with the guys not playing with the intensity we needed. Once we picked it up after they scored their goal, we had a fire under us,” Parker said. “We moved the ball very well, and our defense did a great job doubling guys and taking dribblers out of the game.”
DHS will finish its season against the Tigers (5-7-1, 3-2-1 SWL). A senior-day victory would clinch the SWL in front of Montrose (9-3, 5-1 SWL).
“We had an overall good performance (Friday), and we have more to come (Saturday),” Parker said.
