With the dust wind a-blowing, the Wolverines were glad to get out of this one quickly.
The Bayfield High School boys baseball team beat Montezuma-Cortez 14-2 in five quick innings Tuesday in Cortez.
On his scheduled bullpen workout day, Clay Miller started three innings to get the win. He gave up four hits for his first two earned runs of the season but struck out nine batters.
Darren Hoselton pitched two innings in relief for one hit and no runs.
“Pitching was really good,” BHS head coach Tom Horton said.
Nobody on the BHS team got multiple hits, but the Panthers’ pitchers kept putting the Wolverines on base with walks and hit batters.
Freshman Kelton McCoy capitalized with his first-ever home run – a grand slam at that.
“That was cool,” McCoy said. “What do you do for an encore?”
Trey Lange also hit a three-run homer to make it 9-0 at the end of the second inning.
“All we had to do was play a little defense and get it done,” Horton said.
The Wolverines (11-2, 2-0 Intermountain League) will play Monte Vista at 11 a.m. Saturday in Monte Vista.
