Ignacio girls meet Bayfield in matchup

Bobcats look to build momentum, Wolverines want to grow
The Pine River Rivalry will see fierce competition between the Bayfield and Ignacio girls basketbal teams. Ignacio won last year’s meeting, 49-24.

The Ignacio High School girls basketball team will host the Bayfield Wolverines on Tuesday to continue their area rivalry.

These two teams couldn’t be any more different. Ignacio (7-3, 4-0 2A/1A San Juan League) is currently tied for first with Norwood in league play, and Bayfield (3-7, 0-3 3A Intermountain League) is trying to break its four-game losing streak and turn its season around.

The Bobcats average 48.2 points, 8.8 assists and 1.8 blocks per game. The Wolverines grab 31.3 rebounds a game to the Bobcats’ 22.8. Bayfield also has 10.9 steals per game to Ignacio’s 10.1.

“We just want to take one game a time, we are focused with playing as a team and play to the best of our ability,” Ignacio head coach Shane Seibel said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.

Hilda Garcia leads the Bobcats with 11.6 points, 2.7 assists and 1.1 blocks per game.

Ignacio won last year’s meeting as Garcia led the Bobcats with 17 points and four rebounds.

Bayfield is coming off a winless season and according to head coach Lana Killough, this game is about gaining experience.

“I’m hoping they can play under control and play with patience and to work hard on defense,” said Killough in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.

Freshman Tymbree Florian leads the Wolverines with 8.8 points per game.

The girls side of the Pine River Rivalry tips off at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Ignacio High School.

“The Pine River Rivalry goes back a long time so we want to honor that, we’ll bring our best,” said Seibel.
