I read with interest the letters to the
I, too, remember the images, books, movies and other icons of my past. However, I’m 60 years old and now realize how many of those things I once enjoyed were racist or sexist in nature.
We simply can’t deny that people of color and women have not enjoyed respect and equality throughout much of our history and so many have experienced violence, brutality, slavery and genocide. We should recognize, as a nation, that we are living in a hinge moment in history when we can choose to finally recognize and celebrate the diversity of this great nation.
We can do so by choosing new images and icons and language that is truly inclusive of all of the people who make up America. Let’s start by telling all of our stories and finding the common values that unify and inspire us.
