Isabela Martinez started the season off right for the Fort Lewis College women’s golf team.
She shot an 8-over 80 to open the season tied for eighth individually at the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference event of the season Monday in Longmont.
Martinez trails the leaders, Sydney Gillespie (Colorado Christian) and Naomi Yamada (Colorado Mesa University) by four shots heading into the second round Tuesday at The Fox Hill Club.
The women’s team sits in 13th place after shooting an opening round 366 as a group, 78 shots over par. They are 50 shots back of leaders Colorado Mesa University.
Jessica Thulson (90), Lauren Trujillo (95), Lindsey Blythe (101) and Judith Camacho (104) rounded out the scoring for the Skyhawks.
The Skyhawks men’s team also opened play Monday but in Denver at Heritage Todd Creek.
After 36 holes, the men’s team is in ninth place at +35. The Skyhawks trail first place CSU-Pueblo by 38 strokes.
Dillon Washburn is leading the way for Fort Lewis. He followed an opening round 73 with a 75 in round two and sits tied for 15th heading into the final round. Ryan Tanner’s 74 in round two was good enough to pick up a few spots. Tanner is tied for 35th.
