100 years ago: Local community activity included Miss Frances Bell returning home after being treatment for “a case of grip,” the Smelter baseball team failing again to achieve honors for the season, and the street department using the “grader” to allow for drainage and “prolong the existence of the sleighing.”
75 years ago: A light-heavyweight boxer from the Durango area, Richard (Dick) Connor, had a knockout victory in the third round of a Marine Corps fight in San Diego, where he was being trained after enlisting.
50 Years Ago: Brasier Brothers Construction Co. of Norwood was the low bidder in supplying gravel in La Plata County for the new year. Other bids were submitted by companies from Trinidad, Pueblo, Naturita, Arvada, Montrose, Denver and Durango.
25 years ago: A 19-year-old woman was injured in a car accident in front of the arts building at Fort Lewis College. She was treated at Mercy Medical Center.
