Roadrunners chase FLC from Denver

One in the first, two in the second, and the Metro State Roadrunners chased the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks from Auraria Field with a 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday in Denver.

“We defintely felt like we did enough to win the game,” FLC men’s soccer coach Oige Kennedy said.

The statistics bear that out, too.

FLC (6-4-1, 3-4-0 RMAC) outshot Metro State (6-2-3, 4-1-2 RMAC) 24-15, including 11-1 in the first half, and outcornered the home side 10-2.

“Not making that balance pay was disappointing,” Kennedy said.

FLC missed a great chance to tally in the first half when the game was scoreless, then the Roadrunners’ Kevin Pocalyko scored the game’s first goal in the 43rd minute.

Danny Arrubla scored in the 71st minute to make it 2-0.

Austin Derksen assisted Zac Lawrence for the Skyhawks’ only goal in the 79th minute.

Two minutes later, the Roadrunners regained their two-goal advantage on a header goal from Makir Oropeza.

“That was a tough one to take,” Kennedy said. “We had a lot of possession, and we were great leading up to the goal.

“We felt like we dominated that side of the game, but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t score.”

It means the Skyhawks, losers of four of their last six, now will face No. 16 Colorado School of Mines at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Golden.
