The Pine River Valley Heritage Society is displaying some of the history of the Missionary Ridge fire at a special display at the Pine River Library. The 2002 wildfire burned 73,000 acres across three counties. Thousands of people were evacuated before the fire destroyed 57 homes and 27 other buildings. Fire suppression cost $38 million as the fire burned for 39 days north of Vallecito and west toward Durango.
The exhibit will be on display through May, then the Heritage Society will open its museum in downtown Bayfield on June 2.
