Letters: Now more than ever, we must shop local

Thank you to the citizens who are staying at home, wearing masks and being considerate of the health of all of our fellow citizens.

I am saddened by the closing of three of my favorite restaurants: Red Snapper; Pura Vida Cafe, in Vallecito; and Eno’s Wine Bar. We all probably recognize that with economic concerns, other shops and restaurants may be the next to close.

I have shopped mostly online the past three months. Amazon doesn’t need my money, local merchants do.

With the hope that we can help save local restaurants, shops and services, please join me in changing my recent shopping habits. These local establishments need our business; their employees need to be able to keep their jobs.

As our businesses begin to reopen, many of them are in a growing process with online ordering and limited customers in their shops; their websites and attempts to provide good service are new and being tested. In my decision to shop local, I need to be patient and persevere (sometimes with humor) as we all learn new ways of working together.

Keeping Durango merchants and services in business is up to us. Take the time and money to shop local.
