First National Bank of Durango announces these new hires:
Kassia Barber has been hired as a receptionist. Barber is a student at University of New Mexico who lives in Aztec.
Tyler Rice is an intern working in the marketing department. Rice relocated from Georgia, and he is a student at Fort Lewis College.
Peggi Witman is a new universal banker. Witman and her husband recently moved to Durango from Reno, Nevada.
Sarah Ptacek is a new universal banker. Ptacek moved to Durango seven months ago from Carbondale.

Federal funds granted to help local economy
The Region 9 Economic Development District has been approved to receive $61,000 in planning and technical assistance funds through the Economic Development Administration.
The funding has been given annually to Region 9 in varying amounts to support economic-development planning efforts and partner with community groups, governments and the private sector, to accomplish special projects and provide technical support. This includes assisting local communities in updating community profiles and community development action plans, and other needed data compilation.

First National holds appreciation day
First National Bank of Durango will host its annual Community Appreciation Day event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 12 in the parking lot of the main office, 259 W. Ninth St.
There will be music by the Bar D Wranglers and American General Media, bratwursts from Sunnyside Meats, drinks from Durango Coca-Cola, and cookies from Bread. Music and food are free.
Racer joins team at bicycle shop
Mountain Bike Specialists announces professional racer Kristin McGrath has joined its team.
McGrath, a Durango cyclist, will assist customers. McGrath brings to the company her education with a degree in exercise physiology from the University of Tennessee and her knowledge of nutrition and cycling as a professional cyclist since 2008.

Bear Smart receives donation
Bear Smart Durango, a local nonprofit, thanks La Plata Electric Association for its $600 contribution toward the Spring Bear Wake-Up Social to be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rotary Park.
This funding allows Four Corners Broadcasting to provide a live radio broadcast at the event from 1 to 4 p.m. The fourth annual community event serves as a reminder to residents that bears are back among us and to adopt or continue Bear Smart practices in reducing human-bear conflict.

Cybercrime topic of Durango talk
The Durango Business Improvement District, in partnership with the Durango Chamber of Commerce, will host “Cybercrime and Prevention for Small Business,” from 3 to 4 p.m. June 15 at the Pine River Valley Bank, 1701 Main Ave.
Featured presenter will be Ike Barnes of the U.S. Secret Service. Barnes, who is assistant to the special agent in charge, runs the Colorado Electronic Crimes Task Force. Businesses with point-of-sale terminals, gas stations and banks are the primary audience for his presentation. Barnes’ presentation will include discussion of trends in cybercrime; criminal motives and techniques; no-cost methods for thwarting criminals; and resources for additional information. An audience question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Some tips for individuals also will be offered, but Barnes will focus on business rather than personal cyber security issues.
