As spring returned to the Animas Valley and Durango in 1943, everyone was involved in helping win the war. Enthusiasm was high about the outcome, but the cost was coming home from the war fronts. The newspaper told of victories, the bombing of Nazi war centers with the “heaviest loads of bombs ever dropped,” and the slow progress being made in the Pacific against the Japanese.

All Dairies Must Comply with ODT Delivery Orders
All dairies have signed an agreement submitted by the Office of Defense Transportation to hereafter service their customers on an every other day basis.
The bond drive for La Plata County is progressing well, half the mark of $354,400 almost reached.
The report issued today on the progress of the bonds sales is most encouraging. “It is really inspiring to work with the capable Americans who are striving to earnestly to put the drive over the top,” said chairman John Turner.
Monday in the Fort Lewis College gymnasium Fort Lewis students will present a preview of their annual Senior Day program. The program will consist of musical numbers by the various organizations and gym demonstrations of dancing, tumbling and pyramids.
Bird House Contest announced by Garden Club
The house contest sponsored by the Durango Garden Club was held on April 10. The contest met with universal and gratifying response. About 70 houses were entered by students in grades 1 to 6 inclusive. The Park School students entered about 30 houses.
Spark Plug Dance Enjoyable Affair
The Spark Plug dancing club held its regular dance at the Strater Hotel Tuesday April 13. This was one of the best attended dances of the season and was certainly enjoyed by all.
A large crowd packed Long Lane school Saturday at the dance given at that place.
Indications point to Big Year for Hillcrest Golf Club
The local divot diggers early enthusiasm was very much in evidence the last three weekends. Considering the rationing of rubber and gasoline, golf should be the favorite pastime of Durangoites for the duration of the coming season and promises to be the most successful year the Hillcrest club had enjoyed for a long time.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Martinez this morning received a telegram from the United States War Department advising them that their son Private Ralph Martinez is reported to be a prisoner of the Japanese in the Philippine Islands.
Gov. John Vivian renewed his demand that Colorado soldiers, men who were inducted into the army from agricultural jobs, be released immediately to their homes.

The quartermaster’s crops can tell a soldier’s home from his height. The shortest men come from the east and those from the middle west and far west are of average height.
WAAC’s [Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps] to be stationed at Lowry Field May 1st. They will take over administrative and clerical duties.
