Mesa Verde plans prescribed fire in January

Mesa Verde National Park is planning a prescribed fire, weather permitting.

The 1-acre fire will burn in the Chapin Mesa area between Jan. 8 and Jan. 31 and will dispose of gamble oak, piñon and juniper created during fuel-reduction projects last summer.

The park planned the burn for this time of year for low intensity fire behavior. The park is allotting one day for “ignition” but warns smoke will be visible for days afterward.

The fire smoke could affect health. To learn more, visit www.colorado.gov/cdphe/wood-smoke-and-health.

For more information about the burn, call Keith Krause, Mesa Verde assistant fire management officer, at 529-5062.
