After a big sendoff last week from the school and community, the Bayfield High School cheer squad jumped, yelled and soared into a third-place state finish Saturday night at the Denver Coliseum at the Colorado State Spirit Championships.
Bayfield scored 68.5 points to finish ahead of fourth-place Alamosa in the 3A co-ed cheer category. Coal Ridge won with a score of 78.05, followed by Strasburg with 71.12.
"They did awesome," cheer coach Annette French said of the Bayfield squad. "They did such a good job."
Bayfield is entering a regional competition which could qualify them for the U.S. Finals in Cheer and Dance in Anaheim, Calif.
The team has four seniors graduating this spring: Hannah Whitmer, Gracie Weybright, Eli Monyek and Bruna Tommasi. French thanked all of the community members for their support this season, including the team sponsors and the parents and community members who journeyed to Denver for the state competition. They completed Dec. 7 against 19 teams to advance to Saturday's finals.
Team members this season are freshmen Maggie Eidem, Alayna Lee, Karyssa Gosney, Alexia Wold, Abreia Daggett, Arianna Palmer and Tristan French. Sophomores are Gianna Gallegos, Cayanne Carlson, Bella Madonna, Kaeli Marx and Lakin Hoover. Dawson French and Kalon Mead are the juniors on the team.
The BHS dance team also competed in Denver in the 3A poms dance competition, but did not advance beyond the preliminary round.
