DHS baseball more than happy with a 12-seed

The Durango Demons earned a No. 12 seed in the CHSAA Class 4A Baseball State Championships. “We were just hoping to get in, to be honest with you,” DHS head coach Rob Coddington said.

Just a 12-seed?

The Durango Demons would’ve been fine with the 32nd seed.

The Durango High School baseball team will head to Palisade for the District 4 posteason tournament, CHSAA announced Wednesday. No. 12 DHS (9-10) will play No. 21 Golden (8-11) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Palisade.

“We were just hoping to get in, to be honest with you,” DHS head coach Rob Coddington said Wednesday. “We’re happy to be in the playoffs, and either way, you’ve got to play through the tournament and beat people.

“I think we got a good bracket.”

District 4 tournament host and No. 5 seed Palisade (17-2) will host No. 28 Pueblo East (12-7) at 10 a.m. Saturday, before Durango’s early afternoon game.

The winners will meet in a 3 p.m. championship Saturday that will deterimine who moves on into the eight-team, double-elimination Class 4A state tournament that will begin May 17; the highest seed remaining will host the elite eight.

Coddington said the Demons will need to hit their ptiches and “hit like we’re capable of” in order to move on.

“We’ll practice hard the next couple of days and see if we can go up there and make some noise,” he said. “As long as we go up there and play with some intensity and emotion, it should be exciting.”
