Third-grade YAFL team ends season in Super Bowl

Super Bowl trip brings end to YAFL season
The running attack of the third-grade Durango Demons Young America Football League team was strong all season, including in the Super Bowl game against the Farmington Titans, when Linkin Griego rushed for two touchdowns in a 18-13 loss.

No championships for Durango this year.

The Four Corners Young America Football League season came to a close Saturday in Farmington with one team from Durango competing in the Super Bowl at Navajo Preparatory School.

The third-grade Demons fought valiantly but came up on the wrong end of an 18-13 game against the champion Farmington Titans.

After an early Farmington score, the Demons drove down the field to take a 7-6 lead.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Titans carried a 18-13 lead into halftime, and neither team would score in the second half.

With two minutes to play in the game, the Demons marched to the Farmington five-yard line, and a series on penalties took the ball to Farmington’s two-yard line on fourth down.

After all the penalties, the Demons spiked the ball not knowing it was fourth down, and the turnover on downs gave the ball and championship to Farmington.

“I just lost track of downs,” head coach DJ Griego said.

Linkin Griego accounted for both of the Demons’ touchdowns and was helped in the running game by Cole Pontine, Cully Feeney, Ryan Dugan and Wyatt Bartel.

In the air, the Demons were led by the receiving of Malakai Baier.

The Demons are already looking forward to their fourth-grade season together and another shot at a YAFL Super Bowl.
