The Fort Lewis College softball team has found its footing early this regular season.
Victoria Johnson bounced back from a rough first start to throw seven innings of one-run ball in the Skyhawks’ 9-1 win over Simon Fraser on Saturday in Las Vegas during Day 2 of Montana State-Billings’ Desert Stinger.
She only allowed three hits and walked just one opposing batter.
“I think she came out all business,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said. “Her pitches were working, and we came in with a good game plan.”
FLC scored three runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Skyhawks’ leadoff hitter Missy Fundora hit her second home run of the season, while designated hitter Kamali’i Peneku led FLC with three runs batted in.
“We just called this a good team win. A lot of players contributed throughout the team and throughout the game,” Zeiter said. “That’s what I like as a coach.”
FLC’s second game of the day didn’t go as well. Hawaii-Hilo went up early and cruised to a 14-6 win.
“It was one of those games where they came out focused and ready to play and jumped right out on top,” Zeiter said.
Kiley Ralca took the loss for the Skyhawks.
Chelsea Rodriguez hit her first home run of the season, and Destinee DeHerrera went 2-for-2 with a walk.
The Skyhawks (2-2) will finish their run through the Desert Stinger against Notre Dame de Namur University at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
