Some top picks of things to do in Durango this weekend

Party in the park

Seven-piece Southern California band Todo Mundo melds the flavors of rumba, reggae, samba, gypsy, Caribbean rhythms and Middle Eastern sounds into one big, bubbling pot of groove. With a killer horn section, intricate world beats and influences from singer Santiago Orozco’s home country of Colombia, this band is legit. Today, Todo Mundo will be the main event at Party in the Park, an outdoor concert in Buckley Park put on by KSUT Public Radio and Music in the Mountains. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with music by local funk band Bacon, and there will be food from Zia Taqueria, beer from Ska Brewing Co., wine from Guy Drew Vineyards and a special KSUT Caribbean Cocktail. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate and are available online at musicinthemountains.tix.com, in person at the Music in the Mountains festival office, 1063 Main Ave., or by calling 385-6820.

A funny homecoming

Kevin A. Fox was born and raised in Durango and went on to pursue the cut-throat world of stand-up comedy. Fox, who currently is based in Denver, will travel home this weekend with three other Front Range comics for a night of stand-up at Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive. “Life Ends at 30” also will feature Corey “Bear” Quattlebaum, who co-hosts the Internet radio show “Use Your Words,” Jake Browne, a stand-up comedian and marijuana critic for The Denver Post and Zac Maas, who is a host of the “Whiskey and Cigarettes” podcast. “This is my first big theater gig in Durango, so it’s like my homecoming,” Fox said. The 18-and-older show will take place at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $10 and are available at Southwest Sound and the Animas City Theatre box office.

Winds of the Southwest

Southwest Civic Winds, a community concert band comprised of about 50 musicians from Durango and the Four Corners, will bring its joyful big-band sounds to a free outdoor concert at 1 p.m. Sunday in Rotary Park, 1565 East Second Ave. The band, which includes brass, woodwinds and percussion, will be playing marches, fanfares and classic American tunes. For concertgoers who like food with their free music, the Veterans of Foreign Wars post will be selling hot dogs and hamburgers.

Adventures with the orchestra

Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra will play its second performance of the three-week classical music festival at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the festival tent at Durango Mountain Resort, 1 Skier Place. In this show, “Adventurous Spirit,” the orchestra gets a little bolder with selections such as Felix Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, “Fingal’s Cave,” Jake Heggie’s flute concerto, “Fury of Light” and Franz Doppler’s “Andante and Rondo” for two flutes and string orchestra. The night’s featured soloist is Carol Wincenc, a professor of flute at The Juilliard School who has performed with the St. Louis, Atlanta and Seattle symphonies. Tickets are $44-$54, or $20 for students, and are available at www.musicinthemountains.tix.com.
