Bayfield resident Steven Harris will travel to eastern Tennessee as a volunteer with the American Red Cross to help residents impacted by wildfires and tornadoes.
Harris, who serves as a disaster response and sheltering team member in Southwest Colorado, recently returned from trips to North Carolina to help with Hurricane Matthew recovery efforts and Louisiana to help with the flood response.
The Red Cross has more than 250 volunteers in eastern Tennessee helping those affected by wildfires and tornadoes. Homes and businesses have been severely damaged and destroyed by wildfire, and the death toll had risen to 13 as of Friday.
Red Cross disaster response begins with supporting the immediate needs of those affected.
Teams also assess and document homes that have been affected. That information is used to determine the overall impact of the disaster and helps determine what additional resources will be needed for recovery.
Harris will be a member of the team that evaluates the damage caused by Wednesday’s tornadoes, which killed five people and injured dozens more.
