Only three Durango High School girls golfers competed Monday at Brookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction.
They combined to shoot a 289 as a team, good enough for third place among 12 competing teams.
“Two of the players were sick, and one of my girls had her wisdom teeth pulled over spring break,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said. “All things considered, third place is pretty good when we could only count the three scores we had.”
Riley Waldo finished second overall in the individual competition, shooting an 85.
Natalie Lyon followed right behind her in third with an 86.
“It’s both of their personal bests for a high school match,” Rawles said. “They’re competitive enough with each other. It’s nice to have them pushing each other.”
Katrina Chandler rounded out the Demons’ scores for the day with a 118 in only her second high school tournament.
Coal Ridge’s Melissa Steinbach had the best score with an 84.
DHS hasn’t been able to trot out its top three of Brooke Kniffin, Lyon and Riley Waldo because of health and scheduling conflicts, but Rawles thinks his team is headed in the right direction.
“Once we do field our full team with all of our players, I think we’re going to be fairly competitive,” he said.
The Demons next compete Monday at Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland, N.M.
