Schaul wraps up defensive honors

Ryan Schaul denied Martin Maybin of Regis, and the Fort Lewis College goalkeeper made six saves in the Skyhawks’ 1-0 shutout over the Rangers on Sunday at Dirks Field, the goalie’s second shutout of the weekend. He was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday.

With losses in five of its last seven games, the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer side slipped into the bottom third of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings, a rare sight for a proud program.

The Skyhawks needed a strong showing Friday at last-place CSU-Pueblo and Sunday at home against first-place Regis.

They got it.

FLC shut out CSU-Pueblo 4-0, then Regis 1-0 at Dirks Field.

Ryan Schaul, the Skyhawks’ sophomore goalkeeper from Frisco, Texas, made a pair of saves Friday for the clean sheet, then made a more challenging six to blank the Rangers, his third and fourth shutouts this season.

On Tuesday, Schaul was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.

The back-to-back victories squared FLC up at 5-5 in the RMAC.

Schaul and FLC (8-5-1) will try and make it four wins in a row with another RMAC doubleheader this weekend at home – Colorado Mesa at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Metro State at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Spencer Jackson, a freshman midfielder for the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week.
