Gabriela Garcia receives service award
Gabriela Garcia, a senior at Ignacio High School, applied for the Prudential Spirit of Community Scholarship, and while she wasn’t chosen for funding, she was recognized by the scholarship committee, the White House and President Barack Obama with the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
She received this awarded based on her number of volunteer hours. The award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Garcia started volunteering in 2010 with the local Southern Ute Boys and Girls Club. She volunteered two summers and completed the Peer Leader curriculum. In addition, she has volunteered to help coach youth basketball with the Wildcats since 2009, and volunteered to coach youth soccer in Bayfield under their recreation league last spring. Garcia plays basketball and soccer and previously played volleyball. She is part of the Native American Youth Organization and serves as secretary of the Student Senate.
Garcia is the daughter of Elco Garcia and Naomi Russell of Ignacio.
Cooper Stowers named to chancellor’s list
Cooper Stowers, son of Michael and Bridget Stowers of Durango, has been placed on the Chancellor’s List at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., for the fall semester of 2013.
The requirement for joining this group of students is a grade point average of 3.6 or higher in at least 12 credits of residence course work taken for a letter grade.
Joshua Stout to present thesis
Joshua Stout will present his thesis “Sandy Hook and the Media: How a Nation Grieves” at the Midwestern Sociological Society annual conference in April and at the Society for the Study of Social Problems in August.
Stout is a student at the University of Denver where he will graduate in June. He is the son of Sue Beller and Terry Stout of Durango.
Science fair announces winners
The San Juan Basin Regional Science Fair announces that these students will attend the Colorado State Science and Engineering Fair in April: Annika Piccaro and Logan Moore from Miller Middle School; Elizabeth Valdez from Ignacio Middle School; Laura Clark, Jessica Fiala, Joe Pope, Finn Stowers, Joey Mynatt and Julie Gessel from Saint Columba; Dimery Plewe, Tessa Porter and Elizabeth Maes from Cortez Middle School; Cameron Elder from Dolores Middle School; Alexander Foster and Kayla Nasralla from Pagosa Springs Middle School; Zoe Patana and Daniel San Miguel from Mancos Middle School; Lenka Doskocil from Bayfield High School; Trevor Jordan from Grace Preparatory Academy; Raelen Barr and Hannah deKay from Silverton School; Wyeth Rossi from Animas High School; and Rachel Rossi from Durango High School. Rossi also will attend the International Science Fair in May.

Destination Imagination attend tournament
Destination Imagination is an educational, extra-curricular program focused on teaching creativity, teamwork and problem solving.
Teams of students from Southwest Colorado work for months on a challenge and then present their performance at the regional tournament, which was held March 15. Nineteen teams were nominated to attend the state Destination Imagination tournament in Denver in April.
