It’s going to be a windy Wednesday

National Weather Service says gusts could be as high as 30 mph

Weather forecasters say it’s going to be windy Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, wind gusts could reach as high as 30 mph in Durango.

Dennis Phillips, a meteorologist with the NWS, said a strong jet stream from the Pacific Northwest will settle over the Intermountain West and the Northern Rocky Mountains, bringing the strong winds.

It’s the same jet stream that caused a tornado in Seattle on Tuesday, he said.

While the jet stream won’t be directly on top of Southwest Colorado, Durango and the surrounding area will get a piece of it, Phillips said.

Most of the high winds in Durango will be a result of downslope winds from high in the San Juan Mountains that travel into the lower valleys around Durango.

Durango won’t receive any moisture from the weather pattern.

Wednesday is expected to have a high near 50 degrees, with an overnight low around 20 degrees. The NWS is forecasting daytime highs near 50 degrees into the weekend.
