100 years ago: “Oscar Anderson was down from the ‘Turner Ranch.’ He has all his plowing to attend to, several dairy cows and brood sows, a bunch of baby piggies and is kept busy. He brought along a sample of his extra fine cream 48 percent butter fat. Bring on the Thanksgiving.”
75 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Sunnyside News: “The first copy of the Buglers Blast the school paper is being prepared for distribution.”
50 years ago: “The mayors of Durango and Cortez proclaimed an official state of morning shortly after 1 p.m. today. Mayor Pat O’Brien of Durango has wired Mrs. Kennedy as follows, ‘May I on behalf of the city of Durango, Colo., convey to you our deepest sympathy in your grief. I am sure all the world mourns the passing of President Kennedy. Truly the light the great man shed will be long seen and remembered.’ The Durango post office flag went to half mast exactly one hour after the President’s death.”
25 years ago: Cortez – “Officials of Colorado’s timber industry say they are being driven out of business by environmental pressure and governmental regulations, and the industry needs to educate people about the good it does. ‘We’ve got to educate people that we’re not the bad guys,’ said Dudley Millard, president of the Colorado Timber Industry Association and the owner of a small sawmill near Dolores. ‘We’re a dying breed.’”
