Durango elevator traps 9 brokers

Durango Fire Protection District’s Lou Vito, left, Sean Schmida, second from right, and Jen Sokol, right, free passengers from an elevator that became stuck Wednesday morning at 1201 Main Ave. Abbi Munn, second from left, a real estate broker with The Wells Group, was one of several brokers on a tour of the building when they were trapped.

It sounds like the start of a good joke: What happens when nine real estate brokers get trapped in an elevator? The answer: Light-hearted conversations and a little bit of joking, said Don Ricedorff with the Wells Group.

“If they could pipe in some air conditioning when you’re stuck, that would be nice,” Ricedorff joked.

The associates were stuck Wednesday morning while on a property tour inside 1201 Main Ave., above Guido’s Favorite Foods.

Christina Rinderle, Durango city councilwoman and broker-associate with the Wells Group, said the group was touring a new listing when the incident happened just before 9 a.m. The brokers discussed among themselves how fortunate it was that another colleague, who is nearly nine months pregnant, had been unable to attend. A potentially uncomfortable medical emergency was avoided.

The team was a bit frightened when the elevator dropped a bit when it got stuck, she said, but their fear quickly faded.

“We had an initial wave of uncertainty, but we knew our fearless fire department was on their way,” Rinderle said.

Perhaps being stuck in an elevator with colleagues may not be so bad after all.

“It made for a great team-building opportunity,” Rinderle said.

The Durango Fire Protection District was on the scene at about 9:05 a.m. and safely freed the nine hostages of the mechanical malfunction by 9:37 a.m.
