Author Givón to present re-release of Ute texts
The Ute Language Program and the Ute Museum will host a party from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the library room of the Ute Museum to celebrate the publication of the revised and expanded Ute Texts collection (núu-’apahapi pu-sariniya-qa-tu- po-’o-kwa-tu-).
This book is a revised, corrected and expanded edition of the Ute Traditional Narratives (“The Blue Book”) published by the tribe in 1985. All the oral text originally published in that “Blue Book” is included in the new one, together with several added texts from Southern Utes, Uintahs and Southern Paiutes. Ignacio author Tom Givón worked on the latest edition.
The stories in the book were transcribed from recorded tapes but otherwise are given very much the way they were told with little editorial tampering.

Mesa Verde artist to show photos Thursday
Artist-in-Residence James Branaman will give a free lecture featuring his photography, including never-before-seen images of the park from his residency project, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Far View Lodge Library in Mesa Verde National Park.
The Florida-based photojournalist’s project focuses on combining two photographic techniques, light painting and astrophotography, often spending several hours working on a single image in the backcountry at night.
Branaman combines artistic training with visual journalism to tell the story of places in the present and past. He worked on similar projects as an artist-in-residence at Rocky Mountain and Everglades national parks in 2012 and will continue his project at Acadia National Park in 2014.
The Artist-in-Residence program is managed by the nonprofit Mesa Verde Museum Association, the park’s educational partner that inspires life-long stewardship of the Mesa Verde region’s cultural and natural heritage.
Through MVMA’s operation of park bookstores, free or low-cost seminars, workshops, lectures and special programs, visitors gain a new, behind-the-scenes understanding of Mesa Verde. Proceeds from all association programs support Mesa Verde National Park.
