Calderwood Weathers graduates from ag leadership program

Class 11 of the Colorado Agricultural Leadership Program (CALP) completed its 18-month course of study with graduation on April 26 at Adams State University in Alamosa. Twenty nine leaders in agriculture and ag-related fields from around the state were awarded completion plaques by CALP Board members and partners of the program.

Nikki Calderwood Weathers, a graduate of BHS who now ranches in Colorado, is one of the graduates.

The class spent 2 days touring the San Luis Valley learning about water and the potato industry. Highlights of the seminar were tours of the San Luis Valley Research Center and Hi-Land Potato Company and Worley Seed, owned by CALP Class 11 member Bob Mattive. The class also heard presentations on the Rio Grande River Restoration Project, the Rio Grande Compact and the Rio Grande Basin Plan. "We wanted to showcase the San Luis Valley's potato industry and the water challenges we face in our region," Mattive said.

Class 11's curriculum included classroom seminars throughout Colorado, plus travel seminars to Louisiana and Washington, D.C. In addition, members gained an international perspective from an intensive 11-day tour of agriculture in China.

The Colorado Agricultural Leadership Program develops and enhances the leadership capabilities of men and women committed to the future of Colorado's agricultural and rural communities. The program enriches this culture through hands-on, interactive experiences dedicated to producing graduates with the vision and commitment to lead change and ensure the sustainability of Colorado's agriculture and rural economies. Applications are now being accepted for Class 12 that begins in February 2015. The application deadline is Sept. 1 and can be found at www.coloagleaders.org or contact Angie Cue, Executive Director, at (303) 547-5963.

Trollan completes basic training

May 19, 2014 (FHTNC)--Navy Seaman Apprentice Kenneth M. Trollan, son of Danial W. Trollan of Durango, Colo. and Lin A. Martin of Bayfield, Colo.,  recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Trollan completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor. Trollan is a 2011 graduate of Bayfield High School.
