The Patio celebrated a $1,309 donation to the Mercy Health Foundation with one of its famous menu items - pie.
On Friday night, three of the Ignacio restaurant employees got to pie their co-workers, then owner Emily Meisner got a pie in the face, as well.
Throughout the month of October, five teams of employees - made up of a waitress, cook and busser - sold $1 pink ribbons at the restaurant. The proceeds will be used for screenings and treatments for low-income cancer patients at Mercy Regional Medical Center, who are supported by the foundation. Meisner was hoping to stay out of the messy situation, but an anonymous donor pledged $100 if she would take a pie in the face. Longtime waitress Shana Cundiff, who sold the most pink ribbons in the month, got the honor of pie-ing her boss.
Donations from businesses such as the Patio are key for helping local cancer patients, said Karen Midkiff, chief development officer for the Mercy Health Foundation.
