KSUT host opens used bookstore

Denny Rahilly selling from his collection of more than 6,000 books
Denny Rahilly, right, shares a light moment Sunday with customer Melisa Blake in his new shop, Second Story Used Books, in the Century Building.

People might recognize Denny Rahilly’s name, though they are more likely to recognize his voice as the announcer during KSUT’s airing of NPR’s “Morning Edition.” Rahilly is not using that on-air fame, however, to launch his new shop, Second Story Used Books at 826 Main Ave. in the Century Building.

Rahilly said he is a “chronic collector” of about 6,000 books, and it was “time to purge” that collection and “spread them around.” Not all those books are in the small office space, but Rahilly said he hopes to bring more books as he settles in.

Rahilly also sells wall art, including posters, many with political or social messages.

For now, the store is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Rahilly also will meet people by appointment. The short hours are mostly because of his day job and because he lives in Ignacio, he said.

This is not the first time Rahilly has been in the retail business, or even the first time he has sold books. He owned the Mill Street Blues coffeehouse and pub in Ignacio from 2005 to 2008. Part of the floor space was dedicated to book sales, he said.

Rahilly opened the store Sunday to take advantage of some of the street traffic from Taste of Durango. Customer Melisa Blake of Aztec and Prescott, Ariz., bought several books.

“I like it,” she said of the shop. “I think it’s cute.”

Rahilly has been a programmer at KSUT off and on for 12 years.
