Dancing Spirit hosts kids' art activities
Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center in Ignacio will host Art a la Carte Week next week with five days of art classes for kids. Two classes are offered each morning. They are:
Monday, June 2 - 9 to 10:20 a.m., fused glass suncatchers taught by Katrina Jameson, suitable for age 5 and above; 10:30 to noon, kids will "decorate" their silhouettes after their form is traced onto a painters' tarp, taught by Tammy Jenkins, age 6 and above.
Tuesday, June 3 - 9 to 10:20 a.m., intro to clay with Kasey Correia, hand-building clay pots, age 5 and above; 10:30 to noon, learn to make a pinata, part one of two part class taught by Tammy Jenkins, age 6 and above.
Wednesday, June 4 - 9 to 10:20 a.m., fused glass pendants with Katrina Jameson, age 8 and above; 10:30 to noon, learn to tie-dye a t-shirt with Caryl Schmid, age 6 and above, limit 10 students.
Thursday, June 5 - 9 to 10:20 a.m., hand-building clay figurines with Kasey Correia; 10:30 to noon, part two of pinata class, students will decorate their creations.
Friday, June 6 - 9 to 10:20 a.m., more intro to clay with Kasey Correia, age 5 and above; 10:30 to noon, sand printing with Tammy Jenkins, learn how to make permanent hand and foot prints.

School surveys due back today
Responses are due back today on a communications survey that was e-mailed last week to Bayfield School District parents. As of Tuesday at 1 p.m., 99 surveys had been completed according to Superintendent Troy Zabel.
The survey asks things like how parents generally receive information about the schools, what is the most effective way to get information to them, best way for their child's teacher to reach them, struggles they have getting information, and responsiveness of teachers and administrators to parent questions and concerns.

Preschool summer camp still has openings
Bayfield Early Education Programs still has openings for summer camps for children ages 3 to 8 in June and July. The camps are open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, from June 2 to 26 and July 7 to 31. Children will experience lots of outdoor time, crafts, field trips, stories and other fun activities which are led by the BEEP staff. The schedule is flexible to accommodate swimming lessons, bible schools and vacations. Applications are available at the school and on line. Mercy offering free education to those with pre-diabetes
People diagnosed with pre-diabetes are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Effectively managing pre-diabetes can help prevent diabetes. In fact, studies have shown that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be significantly reduced through weight loss and exercise, which have been shown to be more effective in managing pre-diabetes than medication alone. Anyone identified as having pre-diabetes is invited to attend a free class by Sheena Carswell and Marge Morris. Attendees will learn how to manage pre-diabetes and help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
The class will be held Thursday, June 5, from 9 to 11 a.m. in suite 140 of the medical office building at Mercy Regional Medical Center. To register, contact Jan Wesley at (970) 764-2720.
Town of Bayfield seeks votes for Vision Statement
Residents can vote for their favorite Vision Statement available on the Town of Bayfield website at www.bayfieldgov.org.
The survey will be available on the town's website until June 1, then compiled and shared with the Board of Trustees.

Barbershoppers performing 'Chordbusters'
Durango barbershoppers will celebrate the sounds of four-part a cappella music at 7:01 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Smiley Auditorium in Durango, as they present their show entitled "Chordbusters," ranging from doo-wop to love songs to spirituals.
There will be performances by the award-winning Durango Narrow Gaugers men's barbershop chorus, directed by Amy Barrett; the Women's Prerogative from Durango, directed by Kriss Larsen; and local barbershop quartets, including Durango A Cappella, First Class Delivery, and Mixed Nuts. You'll be sure to enjoy all this wonderful local talent from the Four Corners region.
In a special appearance, the Rocky Mountain District champion quartet "Surround Sound" from Denver will perform unique harmonies which earned them the championship.
Tickets for this program cost $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors 65 or older; they are available at Katzin Music, or you can purchase them from any barbershopper, as well as at the door on show night.
